I have been a Consultant in Pain Medicine since 2007. Most of my work is spinal and musculoskeletal pain, neuropathic pain, CRPS and whiplash-associated disorder. Coccydynia and radiofrequency techniques for nerve pain are particular interests.
My GMC reference is 5171889, on the Specialist Register, and you can check it yourself. I hold the FRCA and the FFPMRCA, the fellowship of the Faculty of Pain Medicine. I am also a Faculty Tutor in Pain Medicine, responsible for pain training at my hospital.
Alongside private practice, I am Lead Clinician for Chronic Pain at Milton Keynes University Hospital. I established a joint spinal and pain clinic there with spinal surgeons. Teaching is part of the job too, as Honorary Clinical Lecturer at the University of Buckingham Medical School.

Dr Mehrez takes a detailed history and examines you without rushing. The aim is to work out what is generating your pain, not only where you feel it.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a GP referral to see a pain specialist privately in London?
No. You can book directly with Dr Mehrez as a self-pay patient without a GP referral. Insurers often do require a referral before they will authorise cover, so check your policy first. Bringing any existing GP notes, scans or treatment history makes the first consultation more productive either way.
How much does a private pain consultation cost?
Fees depend on the location and on what the appointment involves, so ask for a figure before booking. Dr Mehrez’s fees are published on PHIN, which UK private consultants are legally required to report to. How do I check a pain specialist's credentials?
Search the GMC public register by name or reference number. That tells you whether a doctor holds a current licence to practise. The entry also shows whether they are on the Specialist Register.
Dr Mehrez’s reference is 5171889. For a pain specialist, look for the FFPMRCA as well, the fellowship of the Faculty of Pain Medicine.
What is radiofrequency ablation, and does it hurt?
Radiofrequency ablation uses heat to interrupt pain signals from the small nerves supplying a spinal joint. It is carried out under local anaesthetic as a day-case procedure. Some soreness over the following days is common. Dr Mehrez goes through the risks and what to expect beforehand.
What happens if the treatment does not work?
Not every procedure helps, and Dr Mehrez will tell you that before you agree to one. If an injection gives little or no relief, that itself narrows down the source. The result changes what is tried next.
Some people are better served by medication review, physiotherapy or psychological support than by another procedure. Being told a procedure is unlikely to help you is a legitimate outcome of an assessment.
Is fibromyalgia treated at a pain clinic?
Yes. Fibromyalgia is managed as a whole rather than through a single medication or procedure. That means addressing pain, sleep, fatigue and daily function together. Read more about fibromyalgia treatment.
What is the difference between pain management and pain medicine?
Pain medicine is the medical specialty, and it is the field Dr Mehrez is fellowship-trained and registered in. Pain management is what that specialty does in practice: diagnosis, medication review, image-guided injections and rehabilitation support. The two terms are often used interchangeably, though only one of them is a recognised specialty.
What happens at a first pain clinic appointment?
Your first appointment starts with a detailed history, an examination, and a review of any imaging you bring. Dr Mehrez uses that to work out what is generating the pain. You then discuss a plan together, with time to ask questions before anything is booked.
Can a private pain consultant prescribe medication?
Yes. Dr Mehrez is a GMC-registered consultant and can prescribe as part of your treatment plan. Medication is often reviewed alongside procedural treatment rather than instead of it, depending on what suits your case.
How long does it take for an epidural injection to work?
The timing varies between people and depends on what is causing the pain. Dr Mehrez will set out realistic expectations for your case at your consultation, including how long any relief is likely to last. If the injection does not help, that result is itself informative and shapes what is tried next.
Can I have an e-consultation instead of visiting in person?
Yes. E-consultations are available by video for an initial assessment, a review, or a second opinion. If a hands-on procedure is needed, Dr Mehrez will arrange an in-person visit. That can be Harley Street or another of the clinic locations.
Do pain clinics treat sciatica?
